HIPAA's the Word

Secure Recordings

Today, the three major digital recorder manufacturers offer handheld recorders that are not only easy to use, they also provide "in recorder" encryption to fully protect your dictations from unauthorized playback. The Olympus DS-5000, Philips 9600 and Grundig Digta 420 have PIN code locks to prevent others from playing back dictations on your recorder. Additionally, these encrypted files cannot be played from a removed media card.

One recorder, the Olympus DS-5000iD includes a bio-metric fingerprint scanner to make unlocking the recorder as easy as swiping a finger across a small reader on the back of the recorder.

Secure Transmissions

The Olympus DSS Player Pro Release 5 software (included with the DS-5000 and DS-5000iD) and the Philips SpeechExec Pro Dictate Version 5 software (included with the Philips 9600 and 9500) can be configured to encrypt and send voice dictations over a network, by e-mail or by FTP. The Grundig DigtaSoft Pro software provides network and e-mail transfers.

For returning documents from a remote transcriptionist, only the Olympus DSS Player Pro software offers encrypted document sending capabilities.

Speech Recognition

For those physicians using EMR systems, speech recognition can truly add an increased level of productivity by reducing your dictation time and increasing input accuracy. Nuance's Dragon Medical 10 and Dragon Medical Small Practice 10 offer two ideal solutions for healthcare providers wanting complete EMR integration and/or increased dictation efficiency.

For hospitals and practices using EMR systems, Dragon Medical 10 gives you EMR input capability, multiple workstation use and two additional specialized vocabularies: radiology and pathology.

For practices of less than 10 physicians who are not yet using EMR for patient evaluation information, Dragon Medical Small Practice 10 can truly increase dictation efficiency and accuracy, but at a cost-savings over Dragon Medical 10.
